dim lights, cigarettes, heroin

the only real gateway drug

is loneliness

those addicts relapsing in shattered

parking lots

filled with other broken

self medicated

fresh off the metro

or on foot

or the van with loud brakes

and a donut tire

I’ve been there

I’ve seen them

in their final days

before they say fuck it

and get drunk

in rooms with peeling

wallpaper

dim lights, cigarettes, heroin

the world has no sympathy for the slow

suicides

some with lives so mild

they drive up in dodge minivans

soccer practice to

serenity prayers

the only real gateway drug

is loneliness
